It’s been wonderful to see so much beauty and breathe lots of fresh air this past year. Photography can’t capture all of that — there’s no substitute for experiencing it yourself. But I hope some of the loveliness of what we’ve seen comes through in this collection of my favorite images from 2011.

  2. I don’t know how you picked your favorites – from your absolutely incredible (and endless) collection of photos. These are gorgeous, but so are all the others! It is such fun to be related to you!

    1. Thank you Barb! I looked through quite a few to pick these, but it can be difficult to choose. I found it valuable to go through that process, because it forced me to think about what makes one photograph better than another.

    1. Thanks Rockin’! It’s a 30-second exposure on a tripod, that’s it. It was hard to compose though since my camera’s screen was totally black. I knew there was the potential for something good since the stars were just perfect, and the snow and trees made sense. I had to focus manually also.

After I took this, Anna and I slept in the snow trench we’d dug earlier. It was a really fun trip with the Sierra Club. Their snow camping training is top notch!
