It’s been wonderful to see so much beauty and breathe lots of fresh air this past year. Photography can’t capture all of that — there’s no substitute for experiencing it yourself. But I hope some of the loveliness of what we’ve seen comes through in this collection of my favorite images from 2011.

Hard to pick a favorite but i think the Ridge Lakes photo takes it for me. All around stellar effort however.

Thank you Barb! I looked through quite a few to pick these, but it can be difficult to choose. I found it valuable to go through that process, because it forced me to think about what makes one photograph better than another.

So cool “The Night Sky in Winter”. It looks like a painting or it belongs with a fantasy short story. So how did you get the shot? Great post.

Thanks Rockin’! It’s a 30-second exposure on a tripod, that’s it. It was hard to compose though since my camera’s screen was totally black. I knew there was the potential for something good since the stars were just perfect, and the snow and trees made sense. I had to focus manually also.
After I took this, Anna and I slept in the snow trench we’d dug earlier. It was a really fun trip with the Sierra Club. Their snow camping training is top notch!
